“Static” — a new exhibition at PAiR gallery

VV Foundation is pleased to announce “Static”, a new exhibition at PAiR gallery in Pāvilosta, opening on 4 June 2026 at 18:00. The exhibition brings together works by three PAiR artists-in-residence participating in the project “ElektrON – the Future of Amber”: Ieva Viese, Mikus Svikulis and Zane Zelmene. The artists were selected through an open call conducted by the association ASTE – Art, Science, Technology, Education.

The artists’ practices move between material research, archaeology and speculation about the future. The exhibition’s title refers to electrostatic charge — an invisible tension produced through friction, proximity and mutual influence. “Static” names a state of apparent immobility, in which all forces are, for the moment, held in balance.

The exhibition includes light frequency recordings, projections, marine debris and spatial objects that act as charged transitions between the technological, geological and corporeal. The works focus on materials and processes that perceive, accumulate traces and hold time within them, while maintaining a tension that is not immediately visible.

The QR codes included in the exhibition invite visitors to become part of a future archive by adding their own visions of the future and deep time. These contributions will become part of the works later presented at the Liepāja Museum within the international exhibition “ElektrON – Fossil Future”.

“Static” will be on view at PAiR gallery from 4 to 21 June 2026.

About the project:

PAiR 2026 residents are part of the project “Amber Season in Pāvilosta”, implemented within the framework of the programme “Liepāja – European Capital of Culture 2027”. The project is funded by the VV Foundation, the Ministry of Culture, the City of Liepāja, and the municipalities of South Kurzeme and Kuldīga.

About the artists:

  • Ieva Viese is an interdisciplinary artist and poet whose creative practice encompasses sculptural objects, photographic and audiovisual art, poetry and research. In her work, she explores relationships between the physical and the symbolic, as well as between word, image, and body. She graduated from the Latvian Academy of Culture (Audiovisual Culture; Cultural Theory) and the Art Academy of Latvia (Movement. Image. Sound; POST). She works at the Riga School of Art and Media, gives guest lectures, and is part of the core team of the artist-run DOM gallery.

  • Mikus Svikulis is an interdisciplinary artist whose practice spans media art, sculpture, and scenography. At the core of his work is an interest in process as an inherent value, encompassing both the technological and the material. In his media art, Mikus explores forms that emerge from the interaction of technological systems, whereas his sculptural work focuses on the investigation of materiality, often infused with subtle humor and playfulness. He interprets scenography as a dynamic arena for experimental compositions, aiming for spatial transformation and a continuous push against visual boundaries. Blending engineering precision with a free, experimental spirit, Mikus creates works where form and function exist in a constant dialogue.

  • Zane Zelmene is a new media artist working with video, virtual reality, and spatial installations to create immersive experiences. Zanes work explores perception, consciousness, and the boundary between the physical and digital worlds. During the residency, Zane will develop the project Soul Archaeology, which investigates amber as a carrier of memory and time — a material that connects nature, history, and symbolic meaning. Zane combines technology with an intuitive, symbol-based approach, creating works that invite the viewer to enter an expanded reality.
