Evarts Melnalksnis

Evarts Melnalksnis studied cultural theory and management at the Latvian Academy of Culture. He trained as a music theatre dramaturge during his master’s studies at the Hamburg University of Music and Theatre, supported by a DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) scholarship. He gained experience as a dramaturgy and directing assistant at brutWien in Vienna, the Ruhrtriennale (Alčeste, Die Fremden, dir. J. Simons), Stuttgart Opera (Pīķa dāma, dir. J. Wieler), and Berlin State Opera (La Douce, dir. A. Bergmanne). He was a recipient of the Musiktheater heute scholarship for young music theatre professionals (2016–2018). As a dramaturge, he worked on the production Membra. Als ich im Sterben lag featuring music by D. Buxtehude, and on the premiere of JÅ«rasežu nakts at Hamburg State Opera, where he also performed as a singer. He is the founder of the theatre troupe KVADRIFRONS and dramaturge for its productions Pavasaris, BrÄ«numa skartie, and Zvēri ir nemierÄ«gi featuring music by D. Shostakovich. He curated KVADRIFRONS’ five-exhibition cycle in the elephant stables of Riga Circus. His work focuses on postdramatic theatre strategies, contemporary music theatre, and interdisciplinary and international collaboration. He regularly publishes articles on contemporary theatre processes and served as guest editor for the topic ā€œcontemporary music theatreā€ in the journal Teātra Vēstnesis.
