Ernests Valts Circenis (2000) is a young Latvian composer. He graduated from the Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music under the guidance of Jānis Petraškevičs, studied in an exchange programme at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Lyon (FR) with professor Michele Tadini, and has enhanced his knowledge through various masterclasses in Latvia and abroad. He has collaborated with the Latvian Radio Choir, Dailes Theatre (Zēni nav meitenes, Efekts, dir. D. Kaijaka), the contemporary dance company SIXTH (Brīvprātīgā verdzība, chor. V. Goršantovs), the chamber orchestra Sinfonia Concertante, and internationally renowned musicians such as singer Helēna Sorokina, pianist Robert Fleitz, and the Swiss ensemble UMS ‘n JIP. His works have been performed, and he himself has appeared as a performer at several festivals across Europe, including Latvijas Jaunās mūzikas dienas, Starptelpa, Skaņu mežs (LV), Empreintes (FR), and Druskomanija (LT). In his creative work, Circenis explores the peculiarities of music perception, the interplay and discursivity of sound and space, which he realises in both instrumental and electronic music. During his residency, he will be working on material for the music theatre production Ummis un lobēlija, developed in collaboration with dramaturge Evarts Melnalksnis and video artist Katrīna Neiburga, which will premiere in September 2025 as part of the Homo Novus festival. The production delves into the biological processes of nature, their fragility, and their interaction with humans, their actions, and inner worlds.
